November 10, 2018 | CFDLab grad student Romit Maulik received the 1st place award in the oral presentation category at the 2nd OSU MAE Graduate Research Symposium, November 2, 2018. Congratulations Romit!


September 26, 2018 | CFDLab grad student Romit Maulik has been selected to receive a SIAM Student Travel Award to attend the 2019 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE19), to be held February 25-March 1, 2019 in Spokane, Washington.


September 12, 2018 | CFDLab undergraduate student Jack Cook was named in the inaugural class of CEAT Undergraduate Research Scholars. 


June 21, 2018 | Dr. San has been selected to receive the DOE Early Career Research Program Award.

Title: Physics-reinforced Machine Learning Algorithms for Multiscale Closure Model Discovery

Summary: Advances in artificial intelligence have led to a renaissance in learning and extracting patterns from complex data. Despite successes in other areas, applying machine learning techniques in the field of fluid mechanics is relatively new. Most efforts are primarily focused on finding parameters for existing turbulence models. This project explores a big data approach that learns from physical constraints without assuming any heuristics for underlying turbulence physics. Our overall research program will develop novel physics-reinforced data-driven approaches for geophysical turbulence. The research will also involve deep learning approaches that can discover closure models for complex multiscale systems. Research insights will facilitate the building of improved numerical weather prediction models and better parameterization strategies for DOE mission-relevant challenges.

May 15, 2018 | CFDLab hosted Stillwater High School students (2018 OSU-National Lab Day) and gave a demonstration titled "How to use thousands of computers in parallel to solve complex scientific problems?"


May 2, 2018 | CFDLab undergraduate student Nick Nelsen successfully defended his B.S. Thesis titled "A reduced order framework for optimal control of nonlinear partial differential equations" 


April 30, 2018 | CFDLab graduate student Romit Maulik received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award (MAE) at the CEAT Faculty, Staff and Students Award Banquet.


April 3, 2018 | CFDLab undergraduate student Nick Nelsen won the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship 2018!

October 6, 2017 | Our RIG proposal titled "Blind deconvolution of massively separated turbulent flows" was selected to receive funding through the NASA EPSCoR Research Initiation Grant program (PI: Omer San, co-PI: Prakash Vedula from the University of Oklahoma).
